Demi Lovato may not have the same day-to-day routine as the average 18 year old, but that doesnt make her new single “Skyscraper” any less accessible. Dropped one week ago today, the single shot to number one on the iTunes charts in less than 24 hours. The success inspired “Congratulations Demi” to trend worldwide, and Demi received big Twitter love from Ryan Seacrest to William Beckett.

“The new song Skyscraper by [Demi Lovato] is pure perfection,” says Katy Perry. “Her voice is one of the BEST undiscovered beauties. Can’t wait for the full record.”

Says Pete Wentz: “amazing when people put themselves into their art completely.”

Even Kelly Clarkson, who Demi has given hero-status, gave her a shout-out. “Ooh while on iTunes I bought Demi Lovato’s new song Skyscraper, she says. “Cool song and her voice sounds rad!”

For everyone outside the Disney scene, “Skyscraper” is the first song Demi has released since her rehab stint last fall. In a recent interview with E! Online, Demi confirmed her stay was due to eating disorders, as well as cutting, and reveals that the version of “Skyscraper” changing lives now is actually the version she recorded a year ago.

She recorded another version after coming home, but “it just didn’t feel the same, so we kept the original one.” She says what we hear now was her “cry for help back then, because I hadn’t spoken to anyone about these issues and I hadn’t gotten the help that I needed.”

But if the single represents her struggle, the music video (premiered last Thursday) represents her triumph. Though simple in design, its raw in emotion and when she walks on broken glass in the middle of the desert, its meant to [represent] her powering through it.

That video was an emotional release for me, like therapy, she says. I kept crying, I was so emotionally invested.

Here is a smiling Demi from last fall rocking a tan plaid pashmina.
