Perfect for barbecues on balmy nights, a couple of themes in fashion and jewelry are designed to be at home on the range.

The March 2012 issue of Elle reports: “Longhorn motifs and kitschy paisleys get a city slicker update” in a feature it calls “Rodeo Drive.” Displaying longhorn motifs, the rope necklace is from Aurelie Bidermann; the silver ring with black sapphires is from John Hardy. The model at left wears a silver and leather pendant necklace also from John Hardy.

“Best Western” is the title of a fashion spread in the April 2012 issue of Marie Claire, which also has nary a traditional cowboy boot  in the lot.

I do love a pair of mannish dark denim jeans.

You cant see my brogues but rest assured Im wearing them to go with my Lee Jeans bought from Supra a local store where I live. Im often browsing in the menswear sectionI love the cuts better than womens.

I like a playful girly touch though flashes of red here and there (my new Ray Ban prescription lenses are doing their best work doncha think? and a NOTICE ME scarf-style-snood does the trick.

Im never happier in clothes that are comfortablemaybe its an age thing but when I think back to what I used to wear shoes that needed a pilots licence to stay in an upright position high above the kerb, or slithers of fabric that passed as dresses, I am glad to be happily 50ish.

When an ensemble works perfectly together from head to toe, with each design element complementing and working seamlessly together with all the others, that is the epitome of elegant dressing. Understated, tasteful and refined yet never boring, the elegant style requires the ability to coordinate multiple elements into one cohesive whole. This is a style of dressing that is expensive but, as they say, worth it.

Jeweled headbands and barrettes have been appearing regularly in the fashion press since last autumn in anticipation of the holiday season. Quite aside from fashion designer faux fun versions of sparkly adornment for tresses, real jewels have become a mainstay of chic hairstyles through the holidays and are an important trend this spring, showing no sign of waning.

For instance, last October, Vogue profiled eight “cool, modern girls” carrying off fine jewelry, such as model/writer/student Julia Frakes, pictured here, wearing a diamond and white gold headband from Solange Azagury-Partridge further enhanced with a Harry Winston garnet, tsavorite and diamond feather brooch.

Today, if youre an American designer, there is no higher honor than seeing The First Lady in one of your creations. Michelle Obama is known for her trend-setting style and her championing of talented emerging designers (recall her inaugural ballgown by a then-unknown Jason Wu?).

With that said, Charm & Chain is sending a massive congratulations to Suzie Gallehugh, designer of Suzanna Dai, who right now is celebrating Michelle Obama wearing her earrings this week! Suzie is an up-and-coming talent who weve been championing for a few seasons now.

Exuberant bursts of color are just the thing to bring a smile, and this season, exciting combinations of gemstones and other materials have captured the fancy of the fashion world.

In a six-page photo spread in the February 2012 issue of InStyle entitled “Rock Candy,” jewelry expert Marion Fasel writes: “Irresistible clusters of diamonds, sapphires, amethysts, and other dazzling gems will satisfy any craving for sweets.” The sapphire, enamel and sterling silver rings pictured above are all from MCL by Matthew Campbell Laurenza.

A diamond, sapphire, ruby, emerald and 18kt black gold necklace pictured in the InStyle photo spread is from Lorraine Schwartz, a celebrities’  red carpet favorite for her bold use of colored gemstones.

Obsession of the Week: FALLON Paulina Enamel Necklace

One of Dana Lorenzs inspirations for the FALLON Spring 2012 collection was Beverly Hills in the 90s (think gaudy gold lion door knockers). With the Paulina necklace, she elaborated on this theme and added her signature FALLON edge with gunmetal and jewel-toned enameling. This piece feels luxe but mostly is just straight-up cool.
